Maxinkuckee Players: the Beginning
In the early spring of 1980, several members of the staff of the Culver Community Junior-Senior High School were asked by Mimi Kalt (Weirich) as director of the high school's production of "Finian's Rainbow" to participate as members of the cast. The production was a great success, and so the question arose, "Would the Culver community support an adult civic theater?" A meeting was called that took place in the living room of Vickie Dearth to determine the feasibility of such an endeavor. Seven people attended that meeting, so a seven member board was established to pursue the possibilities.
Due to some generous monetary support from some local businesses and tremendous cooperation from the Culver Community School Corporation, "The Maxinkuckee Players" was formed. In the summer of 1980 with limited funds, the Players debut was realized with the production of "Paint Your Wagon." While there were only two nights of performances in that first year, the community of Culver had proven their support with two full houses!
During that first production the Maxinkuckee Players was a group of mostly Culver residents, but in the following years the Players quickly became a regional group, with members joining from all over north central Indiana.
That original seven member board really had no idea that decades later, "The Maxinkuckee Players" would still be in operation as a vibrant part of the Culver community, Marshall County, and this entire area of Indiana!
